Gemcrafting

Gemcrafting is the Racial Crafting skill for Humans, used to upgrade gems for placement into sockets in weapons and armor.
- Overview
To use this skill, the player must first gain crafting experience by gathering materials (explained below), and then analyzing them in the Gemcrafting GUI (top right corner). Once a particular resource has been fully researched, one of four special gem types can be made using the base quality gem, more materials, and a little bit of money.
(NOTE: The player can only craft ONE type of gem from each stat category at a time, meaning they can enhance 1 STR gem, 1 AGI gem, etc.)
- Gathering Materials
There are three ways to get materials: gardening, mining, and energy. Each of these three techniques gives a common (white) and an uncommon (green) type of material. Additionally, all three types of collecting can yield rare orange materials.
- Researching Materials
Once a player has gathered some of the researchable materials, to unlock the different gemcrafting skills, players must first research the appropriate gem type by researching the crafting materials. By putting a researchable material in the "analyze" slot (top right corner of the Gemcrafting GUI), and clicking the "analyze" button, a set number of the resource will be consumed, and some experience will be awarded in the corresponding research bar. When the bar fills up, one of four types of gem upgrades is unlocked.
(NOTE: Though the typical experience yield is 5-15 PTS / analyze, occasionally I have seen numbers in the mid-20's range pop up. I am speculating that the actual algorithm is a 5-15 yield with a chance for +10 at random, maybe about 20-30% of the time.)
(NOTE: The uncommon (green) item researches seem to be more generous with the +10 EXP bonus.)
- Upgrading Gem Skill
Once a particular material research has been completed, and the player has reached the appropriate character level, the player may choose to "upgrade" the level of gem crafting for a specific gem type. Keep in mind that by doing so (clicking on the "upgrade" button), the player loses the ability to make the gem of the previous level (since the gem crafting ability for the previous level is replaced by a new material research), so make sure you are ready to surrender the previous gemcrafting ability when you choose to upgrade.
- Forgetting Learned Gemcrafting Skills
If the player is not happy with the type of gem resulting from the analysis, the gem research can be "forgotten" using the "forget" button on the selected gem. According to the forum post, if a higher level gem (2+) is forgotten, the player must restart that research line from LV1 again. Doing so is costly, but does give the player an opportunity to learn a new gem specialty. Alternatively, it may be better to see if a friend or guildmate is able to craft the desired gem, or to check the Auction/Player Shops for a specific gem design.
(NOTE: Stat gems on the Auction and in player shops are relatively expensive (40+ gold ea.), so if you really want a specific gem, be prepared to pay for it. Personally, weighing the advantage of the better gems against the prices, most players are better off simply leveling, at least up until LV50 or so. The average player will receive 2 LV35 stat gems in the course of completing quests through Golden Plains (LV42 area), so choose wisely.)
