Lesson 6 – Advanced Cornering 2

Lesson Track – High Speed Joyride

Lesson Car – maxed Cobra

In this lesson you will learn how to negotiate a turn or turns which has a jump immediately preceding the turn.

When you approach a turn that has a jump, no matter how slight, the technique is pretty much the same. The drive will need to brake before the jump, and as the wheels leave the ground, he must release the brakes until the tires are fully on track surface, and then and only then can the driver re apply full braking. If the brakes are held as the tires become airborne, they will most likely lock up and cause a slide when they contact the track.

Turn 3 on Broadway 4 is a prime example of this type of turn. I see many drivers brake on the hill and keep the brakes on full, lock them up on landing and slide directly into the wall. The turn in the lesson track is not going to cause the drive to slide into the wall if he locks the brakes, but he will lose lap time locking the brakes. Practice your braking on the approach hill, and the reapplying of the brakes on landing. This track is also a good continuation of lesson 5. You can also practice this technique on broadway 4 in the fastest car you own.

The next lesson will revisit simple cornering, but in a much faster car, and will also teach how to adjust your line when there are trackside obstacles.
