HOMECOMING
homecoming
as the busy world passes by him
he sits and wonders why
how did his life go so far astray
once there was a family
he could call his own
now there's just a cardboard box
that he can call his home
i stumbled across him
while walking about one day
and sat and asked his story
as the tears fell from his cheeks
he lost his job he said
then he lost his home
he was so ashamed
that he never could go back
his family was better off
he thought without him then
he only hoped that they
would try to understand
he did it out of love
so they wouldn't be disgraced
have you ever tried to see them
i asked, for they must be terribly worried
yes, he answered me, but only from afar
and they seemed to be well
and better off where they were
he misses their laughter
the good times that they had
and as he told his tales
it made me so very sad
this man was once a part
of the working middle class
but then cutbacks came
and knocked him on his ass
this world can be so cruel
especially to the homeless
not realizing it could be you
at any given moment
i handed him some money
and asked if i could reach
his family and let them know
he still loved them and was alive
he looked up at me
with tear flowing from his eyes
that is so kind of you, yes
i wouldn't mind
he gave me their address
and i went there straight from him
and to his surprise
his daughter came to see him
dad, she pleaded please
won't you come with me
we've waited all these years for you
i won't lose you again
he wrapped her in his arms
and then he freely wept
the wonder of his child
who did not forget
the father who had loved her
with all his might and soul
hopefully now, this man will be made whole
