Most of the really big merchants are not going to share their trade secrets.

Here is the tl;dr version of what some (if not many) of them do, although this will be a small-scale example:

The AP version:

  • Stalk and study tradechat and AH until you know prices without guessing and understand what sells
  • Buy up AP and amass it until you have at the very least 30k AP
  • Wait for a weekend that runs a bonus ladder/tiers with GM Enchants or highly sought items
  • Pay attention to the Promotions section and remember that knowing dates and timeframes of promos is your own responsibility
  • Spend all of the AP during the weekend's ladder/tiers to max or nearly max the monthly Loyalty rewards (and thus likely the ladder/tiers twice)
  • Make SURE you know what to spend the AP on (this is why you stalked and studied tradechat and AH) and choose the most lucrative stuff to sell.
  • Make SURE you understand how redeeming ladders work or you will lose out on a lot. Ladders do NOT work like tiers.
  • Log into the game, open your Item Mall, collect your stuff and start sell, sell, selling
  • Use the gold to buy AP. Note: this is risky, especially when you are not a "known" buyer. Read this.
  • Be prepared to spend hours and hours and hours "merching"
  • Repeat this cycle

Without AP Version (Expect this method to be slower, of course, although if you do this long enough to buy enough AP in-game, then you can switch to above version):

  • Stalk and study tradechat and AH until you know prices without guessing and understand what sells
  • Haunt both and buy items that sell for less or at the lowest end of price averages
  • Resell for more
  • Sell sprite-collected materials
  • Craft and sell sprite orange weapons and gear that are necessary to make tradeable yellows
  • Farm and sell things others are too lazy to farm--such as Lost Powers or repeatable quest items such as Ancient Jewelry or farm world bosses to sell the A-scrolls
  • Buy and roll enough o-clay (it will take stacks of them) and roll to try for resonance stones on Wednesdays...sell the stones and sell the Deep Powers you collect
  • Sell dungeon leech parties (personally, i'm not a fan of these at all, but for some reason, many people like others to play the game for them, go figure) Read this about trades and understand that selling leeches and power-levels are also at your own risk, since some players will either not pay (or not leech/p-level) as "promised"
  • Sell p-levels
  • Repeat this cycle
