I never had a smartphone, so I`m a total newbie at this.

Try finding a cheap HTC or samsung with good memory like 512ram to 1gb you can do it

Buy a phone for making calls or sending text messages.
Not a freaking handheld computer.

If he will mainly use it for that, then go ahead and buy one of those handheld computers.
If not, no need to buy touchscreen phones.

HTC if you find a good old one like the desire (i have it :p) or samsung S2 it is good too just android don't get any of those stupid *** iphone or nokias

Nokia was good IMO with the non-smartphone one, and I wouldn`t touch iPhone with a 10 meter stick...
