So how mandatory is the pvp? I enjoy pvp when I am in the mood or the battle grounds, but I am not fond of gank fests in open world when you are just trying to level.
I know the game has both battle grounds and 1 or more open world pvp zones, but are those zones mandatory to level or can I just visit when I want a good fight.

While I can not find anything directly confirming it, it looks like you need to quest in the pvp zones at 30+ to get anywhere.

Anyone with some actual practice able to comment?

IMO PvP from SB is the fast way to leveling

About the quest in pvp zone, you have to do a bit of it if you want to stick to the story line but LOTS of EXP from this game come from pvp, both battle ground and pvp zone and you will have a bad time grinding outside when you run out of storyline quest

Mobs inside give you more EXP, killing players give you EXP, daily pvp quest also give you a lot of it

you can level up to max level without doing any pvp but you will lose many quests which gives exp, gold and mats.
Also inside the PvP Zones so do the mobs give 50% more exp and gold.

I am ok with pvp zones as long as there is somewhere to go to progress if one faction dominates, as all to often happens. When you get outnumbered by a constant 4 to 1 in open world people just start rerolling or avoid the zone and just do the battlegrounds. Wish they had 3 factions, that often helps avoid the issue.

I hate PvP because I've had LOTS of bad experiences of it from other games. Like for example hard core elitist jerks who yell at me just because I'm not that good at it. And now learning that it is somewhat mandatory kind of kills it for me.... T.T But as long as the community/players are friendly then I might give it a try and ACTUALLY enjoy it. lol
