Well I can't answer thief for you.
But in Alpha, the 2 cleric branches were Training and Heal.
Heal was just that, the healer type Cleric with the debuffs/AoE heals/more effective heals/protective buffs.
Training was the DPS Cleric that had the attack buffs, mp regen buff, many DPS skills, and one skill that dealt both damage and heals.
