F1 mourns the loss of 'Professor Sid' !!

Professor Sid Watkins, best known for his efforts to improve safety in F1, has died just days after celebrating his 84th birthday.

The renowned neurosurgeon spent 26 years as the FIA's safety and medical delegate to the top flight and, as head of the sport's on-track medical team, was often first on the scene at some of its worst accidents. He was rightly acclaimed for saving the lives of some of F1's biggest names, as he was for his efforts to advance the sport's safety record through three of its most notorious decades.

He was also well-known for his close relationship with Ayrton Senna, and for suggesting that the Brazilian pack in F1 and go fishing' during the black Imola weekend of 1994, and continued his work with the FIA long after his friend's untimely passing, eventually taking on the role of heading up the FIA Institute of Motor Sport Safety - a post he held until finally retiring for good in 2011.
- from Crash.net

He did so much for the sport, and was highly respected by everybody whether they knew him personally or not, and will be sadly missed !!

Grateful thanks to PupsiK for the awesome sigs !!

singapore

The F1 circus now rolls into this island on the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula. A small island, but one that has been of global importance as a major trade route for well over a century, and with the biggest freight-handling depot in the world, tranferring goods of all shapes and sizes from every part of the world, to every part of the world. But though it has a long history, it's modern and vibrant cities and population keep it very much in the present era. There was some doubt about the future of F1 in Singapore, but the organisers have signed a new 5 year contract to keep racing here, and being a night race makes it a unique event !!

In free practice several cars bounced off the concrete walls on this very slippery street circuit, and even though it got 'rubbered-in' it was still slippery during qualifying !!

Q1 - Several cars had problems with the chicane, and had their laps disallowed by the stewards. Alonso bounces over the same chicane, but sets a fast lap the next time around to go into 1st place. Vettel is just 0.002 behind and goes second, but that doesn't last as Raikkonen has an excellent mid sector and takes 1st. Until Di Resta and then Grosjean (returning after his ban) claims the spot for himself !!

Q2 - Grosjean has a spin and hits the wall with his left rear, but is able to make his way back to the pits. Alonso sets a fast lap, but Vettel has a better lap and takes the place off him. Senna hits the wall and damages his car, he limps back to the pits to retire. Hamilton takes 1st place. At the end of the session, Massa and Raikkonen are out of further qualifying !!

Q3 - Button sets an early fast lap, but team-mate Hamilton sets a faster one and takes the place away from him. Maldonado has a fast run, to go 2nd. Grosjean slides sideways around several corners as he pushes hard. So the front of the grid is - 1. Hamilton, 2. Maldonado, 3. Vettel, 4. Button, 5. Alonso, and 6. Di Resta. The temperature is hot and humid, the lights are bright, and the forecast is dry - let's go racing !!

The cars lined up at the start, but instead of heading off on their formation lap, the drivers and all of their teams and the F1 organisers - as well as the crowd - stood for a minute's silence in honour of Professor Sid Watkins, known affectionately as 'The Prof' !!

Lights out, and the front drivers all make a good start, Vettel moving up into 2nd. There's some jostling, but all make it through the first lap without too much drama, though Kovaleinen and Petrov touch, knocking off Petrov's front wing who pits. Massa also pits with a puncture !!

No safety car at the start, but the stewards announce they will be looking at several incidents later. Grosjean is informed by his team that they're not receiving telemetry from his car - something Raikkonen had last time out !!

Lap 6 and the race is settling into the usual processional follow-my-leader, as the cars reduce their fuel load as well as the overall weight, and the drivers try to find some advantage over their rivals. The stewards announce no further action to the incidents !!

Lap 9 Webber makes a routine but early pit stop for a set of harder compounds, and rejoins in 19th place. Vettel misses the chicane, which the stewards will be watching for, and he pits for new tyres, he rejoins in 12th place !!

Lap 12 Alonso pits, as does Schumacher. Button (in 2nd) is setting consistently faster times than Hamilton, who pits as does Di Resta and Rosberg. Crucially, Hamilton rejoins in front of Vettel !!

Lap 14 Maldonado pits from 2nd. Button pits from the lead, and he returns in 3rd place. Next lap, Maldonado almost sideswiped Hulkenberg while trying to overtake. Lap 19 struggling with old tyres, Perez cuts the chicane and drops 2 places, he pits as does Hulkenberg !!

Lap 23 Hamilton loses gears and has to stop from the lead, and this will hit hard his championship chances. Vettel takes over the lead, with Button in second. Lap 26 Senna pits for a set of super-soft tyres !!

Lap 29 Webber is pitted early hoping for positional advantage, and rejoins ahead of the Ricciardo-Perez battle. Both Maldonado and Alonso pit, with Maldonado getting out just in front !!

Lap 33 Alonso tries several times to get past Maldonado but fails. Karthikeyan hits a barrier, damaging his front right wheel, and bringing out a safety car. The teams take advantage of this, pitting their cars while they have chance. While in the pits, Alonso manages to pass Maldonado and goes into 3rd !!

Lap 35 Maldonado receives a message from the pits about a hydraulic problem and to stop, but instead he makes his way back to the pits, and that makes 9 races without a point. Lap 38 and the safety car pits, and Button almost rear-ends Vettel in his eagerness !!

Lap 39 Schumacher rear-ends Vergne approaching a corner, and both cars are out, and bringing out another safety car. Watching the replay, it seems as if Schumacher wasn't expecting Vergne to slow. Not surprisingly, the steward will be investigating !!

Lap 42 the teams pit their cars under the safety car, the Caterham team releasing their car a bit too early and the driver has to stop (still in the pit lane) while the team run to push him back (failed to tighten nuts). The safety car pits this lap !!

Lap 43 Massa and Senna battle as Massa tries to pass, almost coming together, and the stewards will investigate. Lap 47 Massa now battles with Ricciardo, and passes ok, leaving Senna to try. Grosjean receives the message that team-mate Raikkonen is faster and to let him pass, which he does !!

Lap 49 Perez tries to pass Hulkenberg on the inside, but Hulkenberg defends and they make contact knocking off Perez's front wing. Webber passes Kobayashi as does Hulkenberg, but knocks off Kobayashi's front wing which causes a puncture for Hulkenberg !!

Lap 51 both Kobayashi and Hulkenberg pit for new tyres, and a new wing. The stewards announce no further action in the Schumacher incident, and announce an investigation into the Hulkenberg incidents - the stewards are certainly having to work today !!

Because of the many incidents and safety cars, the race will not have time to go the full distance of 61 laps, and will end after 2 hours have passed !!

Webber has a full battery of KERS and combined with the DRS he flies past Senna. Buthe isn't able to pass Ricciardo. Senna retires with a loss of power. Vettel takes the flag, with Button a close second and Alonso in third, and the fireworks explode in a colourful display !!

First off, some driver changes for next year - as expected Michael Schumacher is to retire (again) at the end of this season, while also expected Lewis Hamilton is to leave McLaren and will fill Schumacher's empty seat next year, and hard-charging Sergio Perez is to leave Sauber and will take the empty seat at McLaren. (Jenson Button was rumoured to be planning a move, but so far he's denied it saying he's happy to stay at McLaren next year) !!

None of which is really a surprise, that Schumacher is unhappy about his own performance and that of the car is well known. Hamilton says he's "looking for more of a challenge" which no doubt he'll get at Mercedes, but after 5+ years at McLaren it's to be hoped that the team can rise to his leaving. Perez has proved on countless occasions that he should be driving a race-winning car, and take the fight to the best, and I think it's only a matter of time before we see him on the top step of the podium on a regular basis !!

And with all that's happening in F1, we still have a race at the Suzuka circuit to concentrate on. So let's start with the qualifying laps - the weather is hot, sunny and dry, and forecast to remain so for the race weekend !!

Q1 - Massa sets an early fast lap time, as Perez has a 'graveltracking' moment at the spoon curve. Vettel goes fastest of all so far, but the lead changes several times as drivers go faster. Local hero Kamui Kobayashi takes the lead to the delight of the crowd, but that is cut short as Grosjean finally makes the top spot his !!

Q2 - Kobayashi sets a fast time, but Vettel blasts all 3 sectors and takes it from him. Both Button and Massa are outperforming their team-mates in the early minutes, while Schumacher doesn't seem enthusiastic about the qualifying session and only goes out to 'scrub' his tyres for the race. At the end of the session Massa, Schumacher, Maldonado, Rosberg, Vergne and Ricciardo are out !!

Q3 - Raikkonen sets a fast time, but Vettel sets a faster lap to take it and seems unbeatable. Team-mate Webber takes a comfortable second place. Raikkonen spins out at the spoon curve bringing out a yellow flag, and ruining the chances of anybody on a fast lap. So the front of the grid is 1. Vettel, 2. Webber, 3. Button, 4. Kobayashi, 5. Grosjean and 6. Perez. Button had a gearbox change and will take a 5-place penalty to drop to 8th, and everybody in front moves up 1 place. Alonso qualified 7th, Raikkonen 8th, Hamilton 9th and Massa 11th !!

Lights out and Kobyashi charges up to 2nd, at the first bend several cars have a 'moment' and go off, bringing out a safety car. The drivers affected are Webber, Grosjean and Senna all needing new wings and tyres, Alonso is out of the race with a left rear tyre puncture after being nudged by Raikkonen. Rosberg is also out !!

At the restart Vettel disappears off into the distance, Grosjean goes wide at the first bend, Raikkonen radio's the pits to report damage, but they tell him it's not important. Lap 6 Perez does a kamikaze pass on Hamilton at the spoon curve. The stewards report they'll investigate the first lap incident !!

Lap 8 Grosjean is informed he has a stop/go penalty, which is better than a 1-race ban, and the team seem happy with that. Lap 14 Button pits from 3rd, as do others including Raikkonen !!

Lap 15 Kobayashi pits and rejoins behind Button. Raikkonen battles with Kovalainen, who keeps him behind, but on fresher tyres Raikkonen makes it happen. Lap 17 Hamilton pits as does Senna.

Lap 18 Button reports a gearbox problem, but seems to be working ok. Lap 19 Perez makes a mistake and spins at the spoon, and although the car's ok and keeps the engine going, the marshalls aren't allowed to push him back on the track and he has to retire !!

Lap 20 Vettel has a comfortable 19.5 second lead over Massa, and the team radio to tell him to manage his tyres. Lap 21 Button again reports his gearbox problem, but he still seems to be going ok in 3rd !!

Lap 27 Webber pits with virtually no grip on his tyres. Lap 30 Button has closed the gap to Kobayashi to under 3 seconds. Kobayashi pits from 3rd, almost collecting the front jack man in his eagerness to get out !!

Hamilton exits the pits right alongside Raikkonen, but they manage to keep apart and Hamilton makes the pass. Lap 35 Karthikayan retires with car trouble. Lap 36 Button pits, but is unable to clear Kobayashi before the local driver passes the pits, and has to settle for 4th place !!

Lap 37 Massa pits from 2nd, and rejoins in the same place, but within striking distance of Kobayashi. Lap 38 Vettel pits and exits with no sign of Massa on the main straight !!

Lap 42 Senna makes a brave pass over Grosjean on the outside at 130R. Lap 45 Button is slowly reeling-in Kobayashi for 3rd place, and the team tell him to give it everything he's got to take it !!

Lap 48 Petrov is given a drive-through penalty for ignoring blue flags. Lao 52 Vettel is told to take it easy by his pits, as he goes faster and faster. Grosjean retires with car trouble !!

Last lap, Button closes right up behind Kobayashi. Vettel takes the win easily, Massa takes second and Kobayashi a very well deserved third and the crowd go wild !!

The F1 circus arrives for it's 3rd outing in the Southern Asia country, and Vettel will be looking to repeat his win here last year, as well as capitalise on his win last time out - the years' first back-to-back winner, and it's a testament to the increasing quality of the cars, drivers and pit crews that we've had to wait this long in the season, before any driver has multiple wins !!

Vettel has built up a reputation of being at the top of the championship at the end of the season, which is where he's at now - just 4 points behind Alonso - and with just 5 races to go (including this one) it's going to go down to the wire again. Which is good for the teams (and their sponsors), but even better for the fans !!

Q1 - Kovaleinen goes out early onto a dusty circuit, and helps to clean up the racing line. Karthikeyan spins off the track, with brake failure. Hamilton has a front-left lock-up, and goes wide over the run-off area. As expected the lead changes several times, but Vettel seems comfortable in the top spot. All of the top drivers safely qualify, though only just for Hamilton in 17th, and Alonso in 16th. Had Senna finished his lap (instead of pitting), it's possible that he could have knocked one of them out !!

Q2 - Lap times are falling, by all the teams, with Vettel again leading the way. Both McLarens are suffering from front end lock-ups, and 'grippy' brakes. Most drivers report understeer, which should ease as the track gets rubbered-in. At the end of the session, out are Maldonado, Buttton, Perez, Kobayasi, Di Resta, Ricciardo and Vergne !!

Q3 - Hulkenberg goes around and then pits without setting a time. Vettel again sets a top time, pushing Alonso down to second, but Webber is worth keeping an eye on. One of the Mercedes cars exits the garage, forcing Hamilton to go wide and pass it in the pit lane. So, the front of the grid is - 1. Webber, 2. Vettel, 3. Hamilton, 4. Alonso, 5. Raikonnen, 6. Massa, 7. Grosjean, 8. Hulkenberg, 9. Rosberg, 10. Schumacher. With the weather described as 'changeable', means this should be an interesting race - bring it on !!

Lights out, the two Red Bulls pull away cleanly, while Hamilton and Alonso start their battle, and there's some damage further down the line as cars come together. Button is hit by Kobayashi, puncturing Buttons' right front tyre, and he retires. Rosberg also retires after being bashed by Kobayashi, and Kobayashi pits for new tyres. Vettel makes the pass on Webber to take the lead !!

With Rosberg's car parked in the DRS zone, the stewards keep the DRS disabled, which harms some of the drivers. Lap 9, the stewards give Kobayashi a drive-through penalty for his 'kamikaze' moves that took out two cars !!

The marshalls finally get Rosberg's car safe, and stewards enable the DRS system. And Ricciardo takes advantage of this, by shooting past Senna. Lap 12, Schumacher and Di Resta battle, but the much more experienced multi-world-champion leaves him behind, to battle with Vergne !!

Lap 14, Hamilton makes a fast pit stop, other teams also pit with Hulkenberg and Grosjean almost coming together, and they continue to battle when they return to the circuit. Webber also pits, promoting Alonso to 2nd, and Webber returns into 3rd !!

Lap 16 Vettel pits as does Alonso, but on returning to the race Alonso comes out alongside Perez, and Hamilton right behind has a piece of the action, and Perez drops behind them both. Lap 18, Kobayashi retires as Raikkonen and then Massa make the pass on Perez !!

Lap 20, Maldonado and Grosjean battle, as Hamilton radio's a performance problem, and he's passed by Massa. The team radio report that Hamilton's problem is one of 'bad graining' on the front right and to adjust the balance setting. Lap 23, Raikkonen battles with Hamilton, but isn't able to make the pass !!

Lap 24, Raikkonen does get past, but Hamilton retakes the place, though still suffers with front-end lock-ups. Vettel has a good lead over team-mate Webber, who radio's his front right tyre going off, while Alonso is close in third !!

Lap 27, Hamilton pits giving Raikkonen the place, and rejoins in front of Ricciardo. Vettel sets the fastest lap of the race so far, as the team radio for him to take care of his front right tyre. Hamilton radio's that his car feels 'nervous' after the pit stop !!

Lap 30 Grosjean uses his KERS and DRS to try and put the pass on Hulkenberg for 6th, but can't make it happen, and two laps later Grosjean pits for new rubber. Webber pits, and rejoins in 5th. Lap 33, Grosjean puts the pass on Hulkenberg, who has just pitted !!

Lap 35, Alonso pits and rejoins behind Glock, but makes the pass easily. Vettel has a big front end lock-up, and the team radio for him to pit which he does, as do Massa and Raikkonen. Lap 37, Schumacher and Di Resta battle for 10th, giving Perez chance to catch up to them !!

Lap 38, Di Resta finally makes the pass, and Perez is right behind Schumacher's gearbox. Massa right behind Alonso, is told by the team to 'back off' by 'a couple of seconds'. Hamilton and Grosjean battle, with Hulkenberg right behind them. Grosjean goes wide but doesn't make the pass, but gives Hulkenberg chance to pass him and come level and pass Hamilton. Grosjean passes too, but Hamilton retakes the place !!

Lap 42, Grosjean and Hamilton continue to battle for the place, and Hamilton pits as Perez make the move on Schumacher and takes the place. Massa radio's that he's faster than team-mate Alonso, but there's no response !!

Lap 47, Hamilton and Vergne battle for 9th, but the Torro Rosso keeps the McLaren at bay. Lap 49, the team tell Vettel to continue to look after him front right tyre. The astroturf at some of the corners is beginning to wear and tear, and there's a possibility that the safety car could be brought out !!

Lap 53, Vergne passes team-mate Ricciardo, and Hamilton tries to follow but can't make it. Hamilton's car picks up a large piece of the torn astroturf, affecting his aerodynamics. Last lap, Vettel is taking it very carefully, to try and make the tyre last to the flag with team-mate Webber taking second and Alonso third !!

At 82, F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone says he has no intention of retiring, and that in future there will be fewer races in Europe, and more in "other parts of the world" due to finances. Be interesting to see how the 'other parts of the world' compare to the established circuits !!

With back-to-wins under his belt, Vettel seems ready to take another championship, and certainly the Red Bull team have a commanding lead at the top of the constructor's championship, so the last 4 races of the season will be interesting to watch !!

Massa announces that he will be staying at Ferrari for another season, while Alonso has been having car trouble this week, affecting his performance. So, onto the qualifying !!

Q1 - As expected, the lead keeps changing as the track get's 'rubbered-in'. Maldonado takes an early top spot, until hard-charging Vettel takes it away from him. Massa clips a kerb and spins out during a fast lap. Webber has a good lap to go third, while Hamilton also has a good lap to take second. Then Raikonnen takes third away from the Australian. By the end of the session, all of the top drivers are comfortably into Q2 !!

Q2 - Hamilton sets a fast lap, which is immediately shattered by Vettel, while Webber takes second to push Hamilton down, who does a better lap than previously to secure third place. Out go Senna, Hulkenberg, Grosjean, Schumacher, Ricciardo, Di Resta and Kobayashi !!

Q3 - Alonso knocks Hamilton off the top spot, as Vettel has a 'grasstracking event'. Webber takes the top spot, as Vettel pits for new rubber. Button has a good lap to take second, but Vettel has a better lap to go first. So the lead positions are - 1. Vettel, 2. Webber, 3. Hamilton, 4. Button, 5. Alonso, 6. Massa, 7. Raikonnen, 8. Perez, 9. Maldonado and 10. Rosberg. And with only two drivers with a realistic chance of the championship, it should be a good race !!

Lights out and the two Read Bulls take the lead, but by the fourth corner Alsonso get's a tow from the McLarens and passes both, Schumacher has a right rear blow-out and limps back to the pits, as does Vergne !!

Lap 3 Button has taken second place putting Alonso down to third, and the Red Bulls are pulling away with a good lead. Alonso used his DRS to take Button for second, who pulls in close behind to get a tow !!

Lap 6 Hamilton uses DRS to pass Button the same place as Alsonso, Button makes a fight-back but Hamilton makes the pass stick. Lap 14 Hulkenberg makes a pass on Perez, who kept him behind til the DRS Zone, and Perez pits for new tyres !!

Lap 16 Grodjean takes Maldonado, and Senna makes a cheeky pass on him too. Lap 19 the leaders are seconds apart, and have a good lead over Hamilton. Ricciardo taps Perez's right rear, bursting the tyre, and Perez heads for another pit stop !!

Lap 22 Perez retires due to the car 'shuddering'. Lap 23 Grosjean passes Rosberg using the DRS Zone. Button makes his only stop for a new set of hards, and returns to the track behind Grosjean !!

Lap 28 the teams are having their pit stops. Massa pits and returns alongside Raikkonen, who is able to make the pass. Lap 31 Maldonado battles with Kobayashi, who just touches the other cars' tyre and Maldonado spins over the gravel and out of the race. Webber makes his pit stop, and returns back into second but closer to Alonso !!

Lap 33 Hamilton stops for new tyres - and a new steering wheel - in just 3.3 seconds, now that's team-work !!

Lap 34 Vettel pits, as the stewards announce an inquiry into the Kobayashi-Maldonao incident. Massa's pits radio that his fuel is 'critical', not what he needs to hear just half-way through the race !!

Lap 40 Hamiton's pits radio that he's the fastest car, but Hamilton tells them that he's not sure his tyres will last to the end. Lap 45 Webber radio's that his KERS is overheating, but the pits tell him to keep going, and that it'll cool down !!

Lap 45 De La Rosa spins out with 'brake failure', causing a yellow flag period, and the stewards announce a 'blue flag incident' involving Schumacher, which will be looked into after the race. Lap 48 Alonso passes Webber for second place in the DRS Zone, and Webber is unable to reply, and Hamilton is reeling him in !!

Lap 52 Senna makes a pass on Rosberg for the last points position. Hamilton takes another half second out of Webber, and can see a podium position. Lap 54 a piece of debris catches underneath Vettel's car sending up sparks, but it seems to clear ok !!

Lap 55 Alonso's pits radio about Vettel's 'sparking', and tell him to keep pushing. Lap 58 Schumacher retires. Last lap Hamilton keeps pushing Webber, but crucially locks-up his front wheels on several corners losing time !!

Last corner, and Vettel takes the flag to win all 4 races in Asia. Massa stops on track out of fuel !!
