valencia (European Grand Prix)

Our second visit to Spain, could also be our last at this circuit if future plans are to go by. Because of the (relatively) low income, there's talk about switching the European grand prix to Barcelona, likewise the race at Spa could be dropped and the race transferred to a circuit in France. Personally I hope not, Spa is a great race and I would be sad to see it go !!

The Valencia street circuit is both twisty and tight - not to mention the only circuit with it's own swing bridge as part of the track, and the pits in the former fish market - and both drivers and viewers find the concrete walls confusing as to which part of the circuit they are on. However, the drivers are still able to set fast lap times, which leads neatly into qualifying, and a good grid position is preferred since it's so hard to overtake !!

Q1, Glock isn't taking part in qualifying, cos he's too ill with a stomach bug, and his presence in the race is also in question. Several cars have front wheel lock-ups on the hot tarmac, flat-spotting their tyres and requiring pit stop to have them changed. Schumacher sets some fast sectors, but Hamilton does a fast lap to go first. Until Di Resta kicks him off the top, then Maldonado does the same with a lap a few 10ths faster still. The surprise is that Webber can't set a fast time, and goes out with car problems !!

Q2, Several drivers play leap-frog and the fastest time changes second by second. Rosberg sets a seemingly fastest lap, and is a possible contender to be one of the race leaders in the race. Vettel just sets a fast time, as does Grosjean, kicking Alonso out along with Massa and Schumacher. With some of the top teams out of qualifying, this gives the lower teams a chance to shine, which is always good thing in my book !!

Q3, Rosberg sets an early top time, Button outqualifies team-mate Hamilton by a few seconds until he starts having car problems. Grosjean has a flyer and takes provisional pole, until Maldonado goes faster. Then Vettel does his single fast lap, and does the job to be the pole-sitter for the third year running at this circuit. So the top spots are - 1 Vettel, 2 Hamilton, 3 Maldonado, 4 Grosjean, 5 Raikonnen, 6 Rosberg. Should be an excellent race !!

As predicted, Glock won't be taking part, as his stomach bug is still laying him low. Lights out, and Vettel gets a good start but Hamilton is slower and finds himself in the Maldonado-Grosjean battle at the first corner. Everybody makes it through ok, and as the lap progresses the drivers with faster cars try to make up places, but the slower cars are able to keep them at bay. By lap 2 Vettel has a huge lead over Hamilton, and Grosjean gives Hamilton a hard time, while Raikonnen goes wheel-to-wheel with Maldonado !!

Lap 7 Di Resta is told by his pits to go easy on his overheating rear brakes, but is still able to keep Massa at bay. Lap 10 Vettel's lead is increasing, and Grosjean finally finds his way past Hamilton. Perez is the first to pit, with Button soon after, and they get the hard/soft tyre requirement out of the way !!

Lap 13 Raikonnen does a kamikaze dive past Maldonado, but is able to make it stick. And Alonso passes Maldondo a lap later. Lap 16 Vettel pits, and returns to the track still with a big lead over Grosjean. Lap 20 Kobayashi and Senna make contact, and Kobayashi's front wing is damaged, while Senna finds himself going sideways but is able to get it straightened out ok but has to pit with a flat rear right tyre. The stewards will be investigating the accident, and give a drive-through penalty to Senna for causing the crash !!

Lap 26 Vettel has a comfortable 20 second lead over Grosjean, who sets the fastest lap time. A lap later Vergne and Kovaleinen come together and both suffer punctures, bringing out a safety car while the debris is cleared, and the teams take this opportunity to bring the cars in for new tyres. Hamilton has a terrible stop, as the jack-men drop the car before the wheels are seated correctly !!

Under the safety car, Vettel's big lead is destroyed as Grosjean is now right behind him and Alonso right behind him, which means the restart will be interesting to see how it pans-out. Lap 32 the safety car pits, Alonso has a tricky overtake past Grosjean, Massa and Kobayashi come together spreading more debris on the track. Vettel's car has a problem, and stops, giving Alonso the lead much to the Spanish crowd's delight !!

Lap 37 Grosjean is told by his pits that his tyres are degrading slower than Alonso's, and the possibility of a good finish to the race. Maldonado who has been pushing Webber finally gets past, but Webber loses another two places and pits for new tyres. Raikonnen chases Hamilton in third, and the stewards will be investigating Hamilton in relation to Vettel's dropping-out (??) !!

Lap 41 Grosjean's car has a problem and stops from second with alternator failure, moving Hamilton up to second place and Raikonnen in third. Vettel explains that his engine "just cut out", but the full reason still isn't known. Lap 46 Schumacher passes Petrov, with Webber easily following him. Raikonnen pushes Hamilton, with a long gap back to Maldonado behind them !!

Lap 48 Stewards announce no further action to Hamilton, but announce an investigation into Petrov and Ricciardo who had a coming together knocking Petrov's front wing off. Schumacher takes Button easily, as does Webber, and Button seems to be going backwards just increasing his misery!!

Lap 53 Schumacher and Webber take Perez and move into the points, and Di Resta is easily passed by them both. Hamilton has a big lock-up, giving Raikonnen a chance to pass but can't, though he passes on the next corner and Maldonado too is eager to pass. Lap 56 Maldonado hits Hamilton pushing him into the barrier and out of the race !!

Last lap and waved yellow flags (no overtaking) and Alonso wins with Raikonnen second, Schumacher in third and Webber in fourth, bringing the Valencia craziness to a breathless end !!

Yeah, he likes the twisting circuit - a lot like the Monaco track - plus the McLaren team's planning with pit stops etc helped. A well-deserved win imho !!

spa

Ah finally, after a long 5-week layoff for the summer break, racing resumes at the famous Spa-Francorchamps street circuit that weaves it's way through the Belgian countryside. Though plans are afoot to alternate between racing here, and at the Magny-Cours circuit in France. Which will be a mistake imho - Spa is a far more challenging and exciting circuit to race, and the drivers like it here. In contrast, Magny-Cours is nowhere near as much of a challenge. However, we'll just have to see what happens. And speaking of which, the qualifying....!!

Q1 - A sunny and hot start with no rain expected for the weekend. As expected the fastest lap changes often, but at this point it's more about throwing down the gauntlet to the other teams. Schumacher just cruises around with a possible problem. Karthikayan and others are sliding around on the 'green' track while they wait for it to get 'rubbered in' and provide more grip. Grosjean drops it on a turn, and ruins his lap. Rosberg just misses the flag and taking any further part, and is the biggest 'scalp' of the session !!

Q2 - McLaren, Red Bull and Ferrari looked strong in Q1, as did Lotus and Williams, and they all play leap-frog with the lap times in this session. Button sets a blistering lap, fastest times in all sections. Senna slides sideways and has to pit for new tyres. Vettel, Schumacher and Massa all fail to set good times and are out of qualifying !!

Q3 - Reikkonen goes out early and sets a fast lap, but Button shatters it. Hamilton goes wide and ruins his lap, forcing a pit stop. Perez is slow leaving the pits, forcing Hamilton to overtake him. So, the front of the grid is - 1st Button, 2nd Kobayashi, 3rd Maldonado, 4th Reikkonen, 5th Perez, 6th Alonso, 7th Webber, 8th Hamilton. Webber has a 5-place penalty for a gearbox change, so everybody moves up one place. Bring on the race, it should be good !!

As the grid lines up, Kobayashi's car sits there with his brakes overheating. Lights out, and Maldonado get's a fast start which looks too much like a jump start, and the stewards will investigate after the race. Then it's a scene of carnage as Hamilton, Alonso, Perez and Grosjean crash into each other and other cars, with Perez and Grosjean flying over the top of Alonso. Of course the first lap is aborted, and the race continues behind the safety car !!

Watching the slowmo replay, it looks like Grosjean and Hamilton's wheels hitting and then all h ell breaking loose. However the pictures only tell part of the story, and the stewards will need the testimony from the drivers to get the full picture !!

Restart on lap 5, and Button leads the line around La Source and down to Au Rouge. As they head up the hill Maldonado hits another car, and is out of the race. Senna and Webber have an interesting battle building for 8th place, with Vettel just behind them. Meanwhile up front, Button is building a nice lead over Hulkenberg in second and Schumacher in third !!

Lap 12 Webber and Reikkonen both pit, and exit into clear space. As the laps progress Vettel passes Senna, and Reikkonen passes Rosberg with Hulkenberg looking to do the same thing !!

Lap 16 the Caterham team release Kovaleinen too quick, and he nudges a pitting Toro Rosso. Lap 18 Massa takes Rosberg at the first corner, and Rosberg seems to be going backwards. Lap 20 Vettel passes Schumacher at the last corner, and Schumacher pits almost taking the nose off the Red Bull. Button pits from the lead, and returns to the race still in front. Finally Rosberg is brought into the pits to replace his poorly-working tyres !!

Lap 22 Vettel pits for his only stop, and exits just in front of Ricciardo and Schumacher running slow, but stays out of trouble and pulls away. Unsurprisingly, the stewards announce that they will investigate the Schumacher-Vettel incident at the pit entry, after the race.
Meanwhile up front, Button has a 10 second lead over Reikkonen in second, Hulkenberg in third, Webber in fourth and Vettel in fifth !!

Lap 29 Reikkonen pits again, and exits behind Schumacher, who is never easy to overtake. The stewards announce an investigation after the race of Red Bull, for an unsafe release of Webber as Massa passes their pit box, there was no contact between the cars !!

Lap 32 Karthekeyan skids on a kerb and hits the barrier at turn 7, and is out of the race. Reikkonen takes Schumacher, who retakes the position under DRS. Lap 34 Reikkonen bravely takes Schumacher at Au Rouge, and Hulkenberg tries to follow, but Schumacher shuts the door on him !!

Lap 35 Hulkenberg manages to take Schumacher at La Source, but Schumacher retakes the position at the top of the hill. Next lap Hulkenberg takes Schumacher again at the last corner, but Schumacher pits for new tyres. Meanwhile, Massa and Vettel are having their own battles, but Vettel finally manages to get past !!

Lap 36 Rosberg loses two places as both Torro Rosso's take him, and he has to pit. Lap 39 Pic and team-mate Glock battle together, and are both passed by Vergne and Senna, who pits for new tyres !!

Lap 43 Button seems calm, and starts the last lap securely in the lead, which he's had from the start, and takes the flag - his 50th race and the first win for McLaren, and his first pole position here at Spa, and he'll be celebrating tonight !!
