After what seems like an eternity (16 weeks), the new season begins today. I want to be totally unbiased (failed !!), but no doubt Vettel and Red Bull will be looking to make it three championships in a row, though McLaren are looking quick at Melbourne, and will (hopefully) have a kick*ss year. And the return of former champion Kimi Reikonnen may put a cat amongst the pigeons !!

With six World Champions in the line-up (Hamilton, Button, Vettel, Schumacher, Raikkonen and Alonso) it was always expected that there would be plenty of close racing, and we weren't disppointed. Schumacher (3rd) and Vettel (4th) had lots of interest, until Schumacher finally went wide and out of the race, with gearbox problems, promoting Vettel up to 3rd.

It was always expected that the first round of pit stops would be around lap 18, yet many teams elected to bring their cars in for new tyres around lap 11 or so. Petrov's breakdown at lap 37 brought out a safety car, and sparked another round of pit stops. The rolling restart saw Button leading Vettel and Hamilton for the race for 2nd, with Webber (at his home circuit) in 4th.

Alonso spent much of the race trying to keep Pastor Maldonado behind him, but the Ferrari never really looked in trouble. However, Massa, the other Ferrari driver, retired after clashing with Senna on lap 49, and Senna too retired. Kobayashi's "kamikazi" style of racing is always entertaining, and saw him work his way up to 6th. Expecting points, Maldonado crashed out on the last lap.

Imagine trying to drive your car while having a sauna, and you're wearing a sleeping bag as well. That gives you some idea of what it's like to drive an F1 car in the sweltering heat and humidity of Malaysia, and the drivers are wearing fireproof underwear and overalls. In fact, the only parts of their body not totally protected are their eyes, staring out through a polycarbonate visor.

However, the heat and humidity are the last things on the drivers' minds at the start, as rain begins to fall, and they all elect to start on the intermediate tyres for extra grip on the greasy track. Hamilton and Button lead the pack down to the first corner, and great plumes of spray from the cars sees Schumacher and a couple of others sliding around.

Lap 2 and the rain is really pouring down, and Perez is the first to make the switch to full wets, with the rest of the pack pitting over the next few laps. Lap 7 and the rain becomes a thunderstorm and brings out a safety car, and on lap 9 the race is red flagged for around 45 mins. The restart is behind the safety car, over the first few laps of the restart and Hamilton slows the pack down to get the jump.

Button and 5 or 6 others pit before reaching the line, to switch to intermediates, and it will be interesting to see how they perform. The next lap many others pit to switch tyres, and Hamilton gets a bad start and comes out behind Alonso. Button runs into the back of Karthikeyan, and damages his front spoiler forcing another pit stop for both of them. Alonso passes Perez, who had been leading, and takes over the lead.

Lap 23 and Vettel makes a kamikazi attack on Rosberg around the first few corners, and moves up to 4th. Seeing Vettel's successful pass, the next lap Raikkonen does exactly the same move on the hapless Rosberg, as does Webber.

On a drying track, and everybody on intermediates, there's some interesting passing moves happening - too many to list. Button makes a move on Massa, who doesn't want to give up the place, but Ricciardo on the other side of Massa keeps him distracted long enough for Button to get through, and soon after Ricciardo gets past too.

Lap 38 Ricciardo is the first to switch to slicks, and it's for sure the other teams will be watching his progress intently. He sets the fastest middle sector of the race, and the cars head for the pits en masse. Though rain is still forecast !!

Lap 48 Vettel has a puncture and has to pit from 5th, and he rejoins the race in 12th. Perez in 2nd keeps Alonso under pressure at the front, ready to pass if Alonso makes a mistake. But a message from the team tells Perez to stay put, and in fact Perez goes wide at a corner giving Alonso a generous lead.

Lap 55, the next to last lap, Maldonado's Renault engine lets go, and he retires making the second race he's failed to finish. Last lap, Vettel is told to stop the car by the team, who have detected a serious gearbox problem.

Yesterday's qualifying threw up a few surprises. At the end of Q2, both Massa and Vettel fail to qualify for the Q3 session, and start the race well down the list. Hamilton qualified second, but a gearbox change got him a 5 place penalty and will start 7th !!

So the race starts with Rosberg on pole, with team-mate Schumacher alongside in second, and "kamikaze Kamui" Kobayashi a surprising 3rd, with Raikkonen starting 4th. Qualifying was excellent, and I think we're in for an interesting race !!

A good start saw Rosberg leading Schumacher and the rest of the pack into the first corner, amazingly with only a few minor bumps. Button moved up into 3rd, and Hamilton into 5th. Webber and Alonso continue their own battles, but there's no love lost between them !!

Webber was the first car to make an early pit stop on lap 7, changing from medium to soft tyres which have proved themselves the better compound around this track, and getting the requirement to use both compounds out of the way early !!

Lap 13, soon after coming out of the pits, Schumacher pulls off the track and out of the race with problems with the right front wheel nut not being tightened. Rosberg pitted, and Perez briefly took over the lead until he too had to pit. By lap 19 everybody had been in for their first stops, expecting it to be a 3-stop race !!

At lap 34, Perez has some big lock-ups bringing Button close, and approaching the pits Perez take the opportunity to pit as does Rosberg, and Button takes over the lead. Webber goes very wide at turn 13, and pops a brief "wheelie" fortunately not becoming another of his famous "flying lessons" !!

Lap 40 Button pits, and the crew have serious problems trying to get the left rear nut on, and Button loses a whole string of places making it near impossible for him to win now, and means Rosberg has a very comfortable lead of around 19 seconds with just 15 laps to go !!

Lap 43 Alonso tries to hustle Maldonado, but Maldonado holds his nerve - and his place - and Alonso on the dirty side of the track goes off and drops a few places. Grosjean and Maldonado have a few 'moments' as they fight for a place, and Maldonado loses an end plate from his front wing !!

Lap 48 the race begins to heat up, as the front runners battle for the podium places, which results in Vettel (who has had a very quiet race up to now) in 2nd, with Button 3rd, Hamilton 4th and Webber in 5th place after putting a wheel on the grass. Rosberg, with a 25 second lead, now seems set for a comfortable win !!

Behind, Button dives alongside Vettel, and manages to make the pass for 2nd, and Hamilton passes Vettel a lap later. Alonso and Maldonado continue to battle, bashing wheels etc, but Maldonado keeps him behind. Webber attacks team-mate Vettel, and manages to get past into 4th. Last lap, Rosberg rounds the final turn for his first win, having lead from the start !!

Am not gonna start discussing the problems this race had last year, and which are continuing this year. That's about politics, and we're here to race. So let's start with the qualifying !!

On a cooling track, with a dusting of sand on it, many drivers had lock-ups at various points around the track. However, by the end of Q1 the track had cleaned up somewhat, and qualifying was more like what we're used to !!

The end of Q1 also saw Schumacher not taking any further part after his DRS system failed. And the end of Q2 saw Massa and Raikkonen also dropping out, after driving disappointing laps !!

Q3 and a late run by the Red Bulls sees Vettel on pole for the first time this year, Hamilton 2nd Webber in 3rd, and Button 4th. Rosberg was unable to repeat his pole-sitting lap of last week, and starts in 5th.

At the start, the track has another covering of sand, forcing a number of minor bumps. Vettel makes a good start as does Hamilton, but Button drops several places after a bad start. Massa and Raikkonen get good starts, and quickly move up nearer the front !!

Lap 6, and Vettel has built up a healthy lead over Hamilton, who is under pressure from Grosjean who takes over the place pushing Hamilton down to 3rd !!

Lap 9 and the first set of pit stops sees a number of cars switching to the harder compound. Though Hamilton's pit crew have a problem with the left rear wheel (as they did last week), and Hamilton drops down to 10th !!

Button and Alonso battle hard, and Button takes the place, as does Hamilton a lap later. After a stop, Alonso exits behind Rosberg, who keeps him behind after a brief battle !!

Lap 27 and Maldonado goes out after a high speed puncture, and Alonso complains about losing out to Rosberg. The stewards will look at it later !!

Lap 36 and Raikkonen attacks Vettel, who quickly shuts the door on him, and they continue to battle hard. Both pit a couple of laps later, and both exit in the same places !!

Lap 52 and Rosberg had a huge lock-up at the end of the pit straight, but manages to get past Di Resta. With just a few laps left Button has a puncture and has to pit, allowing Rosberg and Di Resta to get past, and he drops down to 13th !!

Lap 56 and things just keep getting bad for Button, as he retires with a broken exhaust.

Last lap and Vettel brings his car home to win, and his pit crew tell him to stop at the end of the pits, presumably with lack of fuel. Di Resta holds Alonso at bay, after a good drive !!

First off, Happy Birthday to team boss Frank Williams, who celebrates his 70th birthday this weekend. And Formula 1 arrives in Spain to begin it's European campaign, and as usual we'll start with qualifying !!

Q1 sees a gusty wind blowing on a warming track, especially around the 9th turn where the wind causes some reduction in downforce, and some handling problems. The Red Bulls exit the pits late, and do just enough to ensure they qualify to the next round. Senna catches a kerb and spins out !!

Q2 Hamilton sets a fast lap, and despite trying the other drivers can't topple him. Shocks of the round saw Button, Webber and Massa fail to progress to the next round !!

Q3 and Vettel sat at the pit exit for a full minute, to make sure he was first onto the track when the light went green, but surprisingly does not set a lap time. Schumacher also runs laps but also fails to set a time. Presumably they're scrubbing-in tyres for the race, or perhaps just testing repairs etc that have been made !!

Hamilton sets a fast time, and secures provisional pole, but Alonso took over pole for a while, until Maldonado takes it. Then Hamilton blasted over the line to get pole back, but stops on track before returning to the pits. We found out later that the team ordered him to stop, as he was low on fuel, and the stewards cancelled his pole sending him to the back of the pack, and promoting everybody else forward one place. A decision that many people thought was unfair, myself included !!

So, at the front it's Maldonado on pole, with Alonso 2nd, Grosjean 3rd, and Raikkonen 4th. Vettel is down in 8th, and as I've mentioned Hamilton right at the back. I have a feeling this should be an interesting race !!

At the start Alonso and Maldonado battle around the first bend, until Alonso makes the pass stick. Perez is hit by somebody causing a flat, and makes his way to the pits and last place. Webber, Massa, Button and Hamilton are moving up through the field, while Pic has a big spin and blows a couple of tyres !!

Lap 7 and Webber makes an early pit stop, takes on a new set of hard tyres and exits into clean air. Vettel pits a lap later, also for a set of hard tyres, which means both Red Bulls have completed the requirement early to use both sets. Be interesting to see how the other teams respond !!

Lap 9 Hulkenberg goes wide at turn 9, allowing Hamilton past and into 12th place, while Button pits. Lap 11 Alonso and others pit, mostly for the softer 'option' tyres. Maldonado pits a lap later, as does Raikonnen !!

Lap 13 Schumacher and Senna come together at turn 1, forcing Schumacher onto the gravel and out of the race, while Senna with flat tyres stops soon after. Lap 15 Hamilton finally pits for hards, and bashes into a wheel as he leaves but no damage done, and he's now 14th !!

Lap 17 sees Webber with problems and with damage to the front wing, and he pits for a replacement. Lap 23 and Hamilton is told by the team that all those in front are 3-stopping, suggesting that he will be 2-stopping and have a good chance to progress later in the race !!

Lap 26 and Button flat-spot's his left front, and pits for a set of 'options'. Next lap Alonso pits, and Maldonado takes the lead. Hamilton and Massa have their own battles, but Massa keeps Hamilton behind !!

Lap 29 and both Vettel and Massa are given drive-though penalties, for yellow flag violations, and Massa takes his early releasing Hamilton, who quickly makes his way up to 5th place with Vettel right behind, and Vettel pits to serve his penalty !!

Lap 34 and Kobayashi does another of his kamikazi moves, but fortunately Button sees him coming and they just nudge together with no damage. Hamilton has to pit as his tyres have 'dropped-off', and once these tyres have 'gone' they're done, and he rejoins back in 14th !!

Lap 38 and Vettel (with fresh tyres) blasts past Button using his DRS, and goes into 7th. Button pits at the end of the lap, and into 15th. Hamilton makes a brave overtake and moves up into 9th. Lap 41 Button also makes a brave move, and passes Massa. Maldonado has a slow pit stop, allowing Alonso back into 1st place, and Raikkonen into 2nd, while Maldonado rejoins in 3rd !!

Lap 44 Alonso pits, and rejoins in 3rd. Maldonado, using DRS down the main straight, puts Raikkonen between himself and Alonso in 3rd. Like the leader, Alonso also DRS's past Raikkonen on the main straight. Raikkonen pits next lap, rejoins in 19th, and sets fast sector times and laps to reel-in the leaders !!

Lap 59 Vettel dives past Button to go into 9th. Raikkonen continues to draw closer to the front, with consistently a second or so faster than they are. Lap 61 Kobayashi makes his trademark kamikazi moves and finally get's past Rosberg !!

Lap 65 Vettel throws caution to the wind, and blasts up into 6th. Alonso's tyres are losing traction, and Raikkonen is only 2.3 secs behind him. Around the last turn, Maldonado takes the flag for his first ever win, and considering how his season began it's well deserved. Alonso finishes in 2nd, with Raikkonen right behind him in 3rd !!

Just a couple of adds resulting from the last race. Schumacher's coming together with Senna, the stewards awarded the German a 5-place penalty. The Williams garage was virtually destroyed after a huge fire caused by a faulty fuel rig, but the racing community looks after their own, and the other teams donated equipment so that the Williams cars can compete this weekend !!

Another more recent incident, during free practice here hot-headed Maldonado deliberately bashed into Perez, getting him a 10-place penalty. And speaking of Perez, his big crash of last year made the organisers move the barrier he hit, back by about 20 metres or so, giving a longer run-off after the tunnel should the drivers need it !!

Ah Monaco, one of my favourite races. Certainly the longest in laps 78, and one of the tightest where two cars can barely fit side-by-side and a simple mistake or twitch of the wheel can put a car into the Armco, and out of the race. Which is why passing is so difficult and where starting position is everything. And having said that, how did qualifying go ??

Q1 Despite the changes made, Perez (who really doesn't like this circuit) hits the wall further along the track than last year, blocking the track and bringing out a red flag to stop the race while they clear the car. After the restart Kobayashi slightly nudges the Armco, but he's able to continue. The super-soft tyres prove to be the quickest over the soft, and most teams switch for the next round !!

Q2 Vergne slides on the exit of the tunnel (as Perez did last year), knocking off his front wing and wedging it under the wheels, and he limped back to the pits. As the time ticked out, Raikkonen just makes it into the top-10 shootout, but Button fails to progress by several seconds !!

Q3 Maldonado sets a fast lap, as does virtually everybody else and the top spot changes by the second and minute. Schumacher sets the fastest lap, but due to his penalty he'll be starting 6th, and Maldonado's penalty puts him well down the grid !!

So, the front rows are - Webber on pole, Rosberg 2nd, Hamilton 3rd, Grosjean 4th and Alonso 5th. As I said I love this circuit, and am really looking forward to the race. I just hope my typing can keep up with the action !!

At the start Webber has a quick get-away, and starts to build a lead over Rosberg. Grosjean is tagged by Schumacher at Saint Devote, spinning him around and breaking the rear suspension. Kobayashi hits a kerb hard, and goes out. Maldonado has a nudge with DeLa Rosa, hits the barrier, and both drivers go out of the race, bringing out a safety car. And this is just lap 1 !!

At the restart on lap 4, the green flag seems to catch many drivers out, and gaps appear between the cars, giving Raikkonen the chance to progress through the field and up to 7th, with Schumacher right behind. Lap 12 the stewards announce there will be no penalties relating to the shunts on lap 1, as several drivers cut across turn 1 to avoid Grosjean !!

Lap 17 Petrov comes into the pits, but there's obviously a problem with the car. Lap 23 Vettel exits the tunnel a bit quick and cuts the chicane, causing a stewards inquiry. Lap 26 light rain is announced in a few minutes' time. Raikkonen's tyres are going off slowing his progress, causing Schumacher to brake hard. Rosberg pits from 2nd, and rejoins in a clear space !!

Lap 30 Webber pits from the lead, and team-mate Vettel takes over in first place. Several other cars pit, though Schumacher keeps going and makes up a place. Lap 31 Alonso takes Hamilton, and moves up to 3rd. Webber 'appears' to be holding up the runners, giving Vettel an enormous lead !!

Lap 39 Button pits, just after the team tell him it's 'spitting' of rain and here a wet track is like a skating rink. Button rejoins, has a brief tussel with Kovaleinen, who keeps his place. Lap 44 Hamilton complains that coming down the pit straight, his head was 'bashed' by a pit board !!

Lap 46 Vettel finally pits and rejoins just in front of Hamilton, and into 4th place, giving Webber the lead again. Lap 54 Glock loses a front wing end-plate at the chicane, causing a yellow flag for debris on the track !!

Lap 62 Schumacher's car has problems, as Vergne easily takes him on the main straight. A couple of laps later both Force India cars take Schumacher in the same place, and he seems to be just cruising now. Lap 65 Schumacher pits, and is out of the race. Button has a go at Kovaleinen at the tunnel exit, and just manages to brake in time before the chicane !!

Lap 68 Ricciardo has a problem, and retires. The sky darkens, and more spots of rain cause tyre issues for drivers, bunching them up, and many parts of the track are quite slippery now. Lap 71 Vergne pits for a set of intermediate tyres !!

Lap 72 Button is nudged sideways, and out of the race. Kovelainen and Perez nudge at the first corner, and Perez has to move into a safe area to avoid hitting the barrier. But Perez catches up, and cuts the chicane to take back the place, but has to give way !!

Lap 75 Vergne's change of tyres proves wrong, and he has to let drivers past even though it's still raining. Last lap Webber takes the flag just ahead of Rosberg, to become the 6th winner from 6 races. A good race !!

Another of my favourite circuits, this super-speedy raceway of two long straights joined by hairpin bends, was given a number of chicanes a few years ago to try and slow the cars. But even so fast lap times are invariably set. Races are limited to 2hrs, but last year this race lasted an incredible FOUR hours, due to the torrential rain that lashed down, and cars crashing at almost every turn that decimated the field, stopping the race. Button had every kind of problem during the race - including a drive-through penalty - but was still on the top step of the podium at the end, and it will be interesting to see how he fares this year. And with that in mind, how did qualifying go ??

Q1, several drivers set fast times, but Vettel quickly put them in their place by setting the fastest lap time. At the end of this session, all of the top drivers are secure from the drop-zone !!

Q2, most of the cars went out onto the track early, to log a time. Hamilton sets what seems like the top time, but again Vettel denied him. Button has a big lock-up that ruins his front tyre, and consequently his lap times suffer also. Senna did not repeat his his crash during the practice session, by slamming into the infamous "wall of champions" at the last bend but he still fails to progress. Maldonado did hit the wall, ending his qualifying dash !!

Q3, Hamilton and Vettel continue their personal contest to set the top time, leap-frogging each other with every lap. So at the end the leading cars are; 1 Vettel, 2 Hamilton, 3 Alonso, 4 Webber, 5 Rosberg and 6 Massa. Button is down in a lowly 10th place, but since he came from the back to win last year, I'm not too depressed by this. And so onto the race !!

It's a beautiful day, hot and sunny, and rain is not forecast, and most of the drivers are on the red named super-soft tyres to get more grip. Lights out, and they charge towards the hairpin close to the start-finish line, and everybody makes it through ok, with Vettel taking the lead and Hamilton close behind. Massa and Rosberg tussle through the early laps, but Massa finally manages to get past !!

Lap 6 Massa spins his car on the exit of the first bend, dropping several places, and he has it all to do again. Rosberg has also dropped places, and is told by his pits to take care of his tyres. Webber's lap times are suffering, and a large space opens up between him and Alonso !!

Lap 12 some of the drivers report that the red 'option' tyres are going-off, and Massa is the first to pit, other drivers do too and change to the yellow 'prime' tyres hoping for longevity. Lap 15 Hamilton is told to 'push' Vettel, in anticipation of a pit stop, and he closes up to him. Button pits after being passed by Raikkonen. Vettel pits, giving Hamilton the lead, and comes out just behind Grosjean !!

Lap 17 Hamilton pits but Alonso keeps going, and Hamilton exits just in front of Vettel, who pushes the man in front. Alonso pits with a 15 second lead to Hamilton, and exits just in front. Hamilton retakes the place with a good DRS run down the back straight. Grosjean pits from the lead, giving Hamilton the place !!

Lap 24 Karthikayan spins, and retires. A couple of laps later De La Rosa retires with brake problems. Lap 34 Button pits again, and puts on another set of super-soft, hoping to move up through the field. At the half-way point (lap 35) Hamilton has a comfortable lead over second place Alonso, with Vettel close behind him !!

Lap 39 Button is told to 'run long' between gear changes, but Button complains of lack of grip. Webber has a 'grass tracking' moment, allowing Grosjean to catch up. Raikkonen comes in for his single pit stop, exiting just in front of Rosberg. Schumacher has a 'banzai' moment to pass Kobayashi, who retakes the place with a DRS run !!

Lap 45 Schumacher's DRS is jammed open, severly reducing downforce, and pits to give the engineers a chance to fix it, but they can't and has to retire. The stewards give Vergne a drive through penalty for speeding in the pit lane !!

Lap 50 Hamilton pits, giving Alonso the lead, but has a slow stop and exits just in front of Webber. Webber has a quick pit stop a couple of laps later, exiting just in front of Raikkonen. Hamilton pushes hard, making up places, but Alonso stays out and Mclaren consider that he may go to the end !!

Lap 57 Rosberg tries a pass on Massa and has to cut the corner, while Perez makes his presence felt and passes both of them. Lap 59 Rosberg finally gets past Massa, who has to pit for new tyres. Hamilton continues his charge, and is only a second or two behind Vettel and Alonso !!

Lap 62 Hamilton opens his DRS on the back straight and easily moves past Vettel, who doesn't contest the challenge, and Hamilton moves up behind Alonso. Lap 64 Vettel pits, hoping the new tyres will give him speed. The faster Mclaren of Hamilton easily takes Alonso, again on the back straight, and opens up a lead. Grosjean closes the gap to Alonso, and Ferrari regret not bringing their man in earlier, and to add insult to injury Lap 66 Grosjean takes Alonso, and moves up into second place !!

Vettel brushes the "Wall of Champions" but is able to keep going, and closes the gap to Alonso with just two laps to go, and easily takes the place. Lap 70 Hamilton takes a well-deserved flag, to be the 7th different winner of 2012 !!
