No one wants stupid thieves in their dungeon party.
However, smart thieves are fine and welcomed.
I play Thief and I learned real fast that there is a BIG difference between partying with randoms and partying with friends/guilds. Before, it never made a difference for any other class I played. But playing as a melee dps...it suddenly became a big deal.
When I party as a Thief with randoms, I have to pay closer attention to the parties needs and set-ups. 9/10 times the party is not " ideal " (ideal = skilled tank/healer, everyone has good equips/builds, etc). An ideal party is not common. Things can go wrong.
Sometimes the healer is struggling to keep the tank alive.
This happens for 1-3 reasons:
- a) the tank is good, but the healer is bad
- b) or the healer is good, but the tank is bad (and has noob equips)
- c) or they BOTH fail at their jobs...
If any of those things happen in a dungeon party, it means I have to play smarter as a Thief so things do not get any worse. When killing normal dungeon mobs, it's very easy for any party to survive. But it is boss fights that can still make or break a party. It is the boss fights that are what need special attention.
If the healer is going to be busy spamming heals on the tank and can not handle healing my Thief in boss AOEs too...I don't whine about it. I don't call anyone a noob. Maybe the healer IS doing their job and the tank we have is hard to keep alive. Maybe the tank feels more comfortable with being the only one sitting in the boss AOEs and says Thief is a bad idea for that boss. Whatever the reasons, I cooperate.
That's why I was smart enough to train a ranged dps class as a back-up as well for tough boss fights. If Thief is not working at a boss...I just switch to my ranged class for that one boss fight and the problem is solved. The healer can focus 99% on the tank and the tank does not have to worry about missing heals. That is always my plan in 3-man dungeon parties.
In 5-man dungeon parties with 2 healers, THEN it is okay for me to stay Thief all the time...because 1 healer can keep the tank alive and 1 healer can babysit me along with the rest of the party.
The moral of the story is if you want to main a melee dps class, like Thief...train up a ranged dps class also for versatility. Not all boss AOEs are so easy to dodge. Higher damage from melee dps is useless at a boss if the player keeps dying and has to run all the way back...
