How do I get my avatar to have a 'clear' background?

Some people's avatars have a clear background, so you just see the image and not the background colour.

I was wondering, how do I do that to mine?

Very Happy Thank you for taking the time out to help me

Take it in Photshop or something and make it have a transparent background.

If you don't have Photoshop, you can try Irfanview

There's also a free application called the GIMP. It's not nearly as versatile as something you actually spend money on, but it's good for people like me that do not have enough talent to justify spending money on photoshop

thank you so much GMValkyrie. Cool when my avatar manages to work on the boards i will finally be able to see it without the annoying white/black background.

You have to save it as 24bit PNG or 8bit PNG og GIF with enabled transparency (for 8bit images the transparency edges will look crisp)

For example, both my avatar and signature are 24bit PNGs
