FPS lag elimination

So today my friend told me to change the *.exe file of ava to run in windows XP mode or something..

1. Is that allowed?
2. How is it done? My computer is running on windows 7

He claims it eliminated all FPS lag for him.

Right click > Properties > Compatibility > Run this program in compatibility mode for > Windows XP SP3
