usually i use backgrounds from web (usually fractal renders, C4D renders), you can also make them with brushes (u can get nice types of brushes on web), brushes + renders. You can change their look with effects (good if you have few layers, you can make each layer with different effect), or adjustments (exposure, HDR, photo filters, and a lot more), or with plug-ins, layer-on-layer and erase tool, teres many ways to make good background
