I like slide cast for dungeon mobbings.
Slide casting in PvE is less problematic, as it doen't hurt other player (other than massive envy from players that can't slidecast effectively). Someone consider it a cheap move, but it's a different issue.
Taking more steps to balance or handicap slide casting would probably cause a lot of players to leave or protest, as demonstrated by the Burning Metal change.
Protest, yes. Leave, hardly. The community coped with the change and it's quite evident that there awas no massive leave.
A man with throwing knives is facing a swordsman. (He) Throw then back off to keep the swordsman out of range.
And dies horribly, as the swordman only needs to charge and hit midcharge. I know real melee combat and this tactic could work only if the thrower is already at a long distance, and only for a while. Besides, it would be kiting and not slidecasting.
A "real" life equivalent of slidecesting would be the Residual Image of Dragonball: the opponent attacks the image you left impressed on his retina, while you are already away.
People often mix up the terms sliding and kiting, so lets be clear when you describe each.
True, and thanks for the explaining.
So what can really be done? In other to "fix" something like this, you'd have to take away any instant casting attacking skills and add a .1 second casting time to them. Doing so would make it more difficult (but not impossible) to slide. I'm not sure many people would favor this idea simply for the reason, instant skills are fun because they are instant.
One tenth of second is no really issue. You would just see a charging bar flashing.
Just as there are ways to slide cast, they are ways to beat it.
But they are limited - recovery time, need MP, and for melee fighters requires a weapon that can't be ranged - while slidecasting is reliable and free. You can easily test it in Monster Arena, where a slidecasting ranged mob can and will win three melee opponents without breaking a sweat. It has happened frequently.
And now, the opinion
Meh, I dislike slidecasting to the point of refusing to use it - I could, not just reliability without training. But I acknoledge that there is really no way to prevent it other than a massive intervent by Aeria, and it's not going to happen.
So I'm ignoring it when it happens. If I'm in arena and I'm not equiped to counter a slidecaster, I just sit down and wait for it to end.
I would agree with a reasonable fix.
