So as it stands now, if you give them your linked gear they replace it with unlinked gear + 1 lapis of each type that was linked already.

So just struck me, it's a better deal to just give them empty armor (assuming that you have extra armor) for the conversion. That way you get the new armor and can still use the linked old armor till you link the new armor.
