The Rangers Log

Seen many promising Free-MMORGPs but Shaiya is the first to keep the promise made by screenshots and announcements..and its only the Beta so far...

This blog is made for all those interested in the ranger-character. I'll try to describe and comment my progress. Won't be too detailled though.. ;-)

First of all: This ain't my mother language so please ignore any mistakes. Still, if you find some big spelling or vocabulary oddities, feel free to give me a hint via mail or comment. I would also enjoy some comment on this blog, too.

As for my character:
Name: Ossian (If you meet me, greet me!)
Level: 19 (on the 28th November 2007)
Race: Elf
Sex: Male
Profession: Ranger, wielding a reverse sword

My stats and skills will be added soon. I plan on updating them once and a while, so that you can compare your progress with mine. Some screenshots will follow.

1st and 2nd day:

Downloading and installing was simple. Usually I would have had to wait till an invitation but I gave it a try anyway and got in immediately (you should have seen my smile). The invitation arrived later that day, which wasn't of interest anymore ;-).
Logging in I faced the first decision to make: Light or Darkness??
My first thought was to go for the Union of Fury for I had seen their mounts...(I envy anyone owning the black panther. Give me a ride once you meet me! We can always fight afterwards!!) But as usual I always end up with the good guys...
Next step: Human or Elf??
That was easy. I'm human the whole f****** day, in a fantasy RPG I want to be something else. Since I always liked Elves (LotR-Fan) my decision was made within a second. Selecting one's sex is a strange thing. I know there are a lot of guys playing as a female character...Thats OK, as long as you don't take yourself too serious doing that. It made me wonder however...in DOMO characters are made to fall in love and even marry...what if I end up with a weird guy?? Kinda made me avoid any relationship in DOMO.. ;-) Well, back to the main topic..
Appearance was made rather quick for you don't really have that much of a choice. Maybe thats something the guys from Aerial could work on (Hint).
Next step: Ranger, Archer or Mage??
I've always played archers in other RPG and I also played mage sometimes..Apart from that, I liked the idea of becoming invisible, sneaking and surprise attacks..Looking forward to my first PvP!
As this is only a beta, I chose the easy-mode, for I didn't know yet whether I would play it for long. As far as I have heard, there's gonna be a whipe before the final version anyway, so why struggle?

PLAY!

First impression: Graphics look good.. Wait a minute...graphics look incredible good...I've played WoW and Shaiya doesn't lack the detail I admired in WoW. That was a pleasant surprise, for Free-MMORPGs usually look kina cheap with rather oversized cities that lack any detail..and the environment looked great as well. I especially liked the forest, which was my starting-area. The huge trees and pillars create a nice atmosphere. This really feels like an ancient forest!
As for my first opponents..monkeys? Not what I expected but at least easy to beat and good for hitting lvl 2 within a minute..

I like the fact that there are a lot of quest you can fulfill. I'm not into grinding (so you might guess that I'm not from Asia... ;-)) so I really enjoyed leveling up by completing quests. This way, you also have some kind of story to follow and you are introduced to several important places. The quest are quite simple with detailled description of where to go and what to kill or whom to deliver a certain item. So far, I didin't have to party in order to fulfill a quest. This of course is certain to change once you reach the higher levels..Like in WoW there are three types of quests: mob-killing, delivery-boy and boss-battle (at least thats what I faced so far). There're also some dungeons, which I haven't seen from the inside yet. As soon as I know more, it' s gonna be written down.

Even though I made some expensive decisions which didn't pay off in the long run (found the item or got it as a reward) I consider myself quite rich..Making money is easy, maybe too easy (Hint). Especially completing quests drowns you in gold...

Playing as a ranger:
The ranger is known for his/her speed and capability of stealth. However, you may not need stealth mode in PvE. So I concentrated on improving my DEX, LUC and STR in order to kill quickly. Works quite well so far. Of course I spent some pionts on INT and WIS as well, for the special attacks are important in nearly every battle, especially when facing a boss.
Cloth and leather are the fabrics a ranger relies on. The armor looks ok, though I would expect a ranger to wear darker colours. I'm gonna add a screenshot soon.. Until now "Ossian" rather looks like going to a ball..maybe this is gonna change later..
There are three types of weapons to choose from: claws, daggers and reverse swords. Most people stick to claws or swords, for you don't find daggers this often..I chose the sword for I think it suits an elf best. Claws would be my choice for a vail. My current weapon is named "lunatic". Variety of weapons might be something to work on (Hint), for there are only three swords to get until lvl 21 I think...Still, armors looks good -quite detailled- and so do the weapons.
I know this might be much too ask: Is it possible to add a funktion with which you can draw your weapon? I feel kinda stupid running around a village talking to lonesome women with a big-a** knife in my hand...Just a suggestion..
